nRF Connect SDK v2.4.2 installation failure (windows 10)

I tried to install nRF Connect SDK v2.4.2 in toolchain manager using nrf connect for desktop, but the download speed was unusually slow and eventually the installation failed as I pop up the error message window. It was repeated several times over several days, but the result was the same.
nRF Connect for Desktop is v4.2.1, Toolchain Manager is v1.2.6, and the installation environment is Windows 10.
I've already successfully installed using nRF Connect for Desktop and successfully built and debugging in the vscode, but the current phenomenon is occurring in the process of reinstalling all of them from scratch.
I'd appreciate it if you could tell me what to do.

  • Hello,

I am sorry to hear that. Are you using a VPN? That is typically the reason why NCS installations fail with our customers.

  • No, I'm not using vpn. As I mentioned earlier, I've already successfully installed and used it on the same computer once. For your information, I capture the failure message screen and attach it.

I see, and the same network was used then? Are you using a corporate computer with a firewall though? I'm still thinking this might be network related.

Are you able to install any of the older NCS versions? If it doesn't work, could you try again with verbose mode? (In Toolchain Manager, click About and enable Verbose logging)

Are you installing NCS from scratch, or are you saying you recently updated toolchain manager as well, and then this problem occured?

  • No. I work for corporate, but I work from home, so it has nothing to do with the company firewall.

For now, it is working normally after several reinstallation process.
    But I don't know why.
The download speed was also very slow during the last successful reinstallation process. (It took almost all night.)
However, the installation was completed without any error, and the operation was normal.

A brief summary of the process I went through is as follows.

    1) The nRF Connect SDK was installed normally, and the operation such as build was also normal. (download speed was no problem during installation)
    2) It worked normally for about 1-2 weeks.
    3) Then suddenly, I don't know why, but the build process began to take a long time.
    4) So, I deleted and tried to reinstall all of the vs code, command line tool, and nrf connect for desktop. (including SDK etc.)
    5) But everytime I failed to install nRF Connect SDK. (very slow download and ended up error message.)
    6) I repeated 4), 5) several times, but no success.
    7) Then, I repeated the same process one more time, and suddenly it worked normally. (But download speed was very slow during installation.)

    It's a mystery...

I'm not sure if this problem has been resolved now but due to my project time constraints, I plan to proceed with the work first with this condition.
I would appreciate it if you could let me know if you have any related tips.

  • That is odd. Is the build process faster now as well?

One thing that might make the build time faster, is to add an antivirus exception to your NCS folder, so that your antivirus software does not need to check every single file created there when building something. And in the same way, if you've updated or installed a new antivirus software, maybe that now takes longer to check these files than what you're used to.

  • Yes, the download speed was very slow during the installation, but the build speed in use after this is normal. I will keep in mind your help related to anti-virus software.

    Good.

The antivirus thing is at least a tip going around the office, though I'd find it strange if that would explain all of this. Let me know if it happens again :/
