Cannot install NCS via VSCode

Hello. I have installed NCS 2.4.0 a while back and decided to finally update my NCS to newer version.

I have tried to install new SDK via nRF Connect for Desktop at first but I have faced some weird issue that I have described in a seperate post:

 Newly installed NCS version does not show up in VSCode 

Now, I am trying to install another version (this time v2.4.2) via VSCode directly using Manage SDK in welcome menu:

In short, I have troubles updating SDK version via both (nRF Connect SDK for desktop and VSCode). Could someone help me out there and help me understand what are the causes of these installation errors? Installing new SDK version should not be this complicated..

The issue might be related to company security policy. I think it is preventing from fully installing NCS for some reason.

I have heard of this being an issue in the past as well, if your company has very strict firewall settings.
These might sometimes prevent the SDK from downloading specific packages completely - if you compare the installation logs from both your personal computer and the company computer you should see the affected packages there.

I still cannot figure out what is the issue fully.

Have you checked the logs that I have attached? There does not seem to be any errors, it just says "exited with code 0" in the middle of the installation.

I have tried to install the NCS while antivirus is disabled for 15 minutes but that also did not work. I am thinking of any other way to check what could be an issue. Perhaps you have any ideas?

Since I have installed NCS 2.5.0 via nRF Connect for Desktop (even though its not showing up on VScode).

Is there any way to check if it fully installed? Is there any way to "manually" add it to vscode? Perhaps there is some settings I need to change in nRF Connect for VS Code extension settings ? Do I need to manually add NCS path to environment variables?

I have discussed this with our VSC extension engineers, and they had a suggestion that hopefully might solve this: Could you open an nRF Terminal (ctrl + shift + p -> 'open shell terminal'), navigate to the v2.5.0/nrf folder, and run the command 

west zephyr-export

and then afterwards do a reload of VSC (ctrl + shift + p -> reload window), to see if this makes the VSC extension able to find the SDK?

Hey. When I open the command prompt or power shell and then go into the v2.5.0/nrf  directory, west is not recognized as a command.

I can only access west if I go through the toolchain manager, select the NCS version, click the arrow to expand the selections and select "Open bash". Now I can use "west".

After executing command ```west zephyr-export``` I have reloaded vscode but the version of the SDK is still not visible.

Important note! 

I can create workspcae application without any issues. 

If I create west.yml at the source directory and then create west workspace, the NCS version will be installed and that will work without any issues. I have tried to follow the below instructions and it worked without any issues :)

This is expected unless you use a nRF Connect terminal inside VSC (which sources the correct SDK version), or go through the 'open bash' option in the Toolchain Manager like you did. In essence, the nRF Connect terminal will source the required dependencies for the SDK and toolchain you are working with (which 'open bash' also does).

If the NCS versions were properly detected by VSCode, I should be able to see them just by opening VSCode, opening nRF Connect extension and in the Welcome View I should see all installed NCS verisons but that is not the case. I can install 5 different NCS versions via toolchain manager but none of them will be detected in VSCode.

Thats almost correct except the last past. VSCode is not able to see any SDK versions. I cant even specify it. When I am building freestanding application and I manually choose that I want to use ncs v2.5.0, it gives the following error:

In order to setup workspace application, I have followed the steps below:

1. Create empty directory. In my case it is C:\Users\petrikas.lu\Desktop\WORK\NRF\west2

2. Since I have previously installed NCS v2.5.0 via toolchain manager, I can get access to zephyr samples projects. I am going to clone the hello world sample project that is located at C:\ncs\v2.5.0\zephyr\samples\hello_world and I am going to paste all files to my newly created directory just so I have all the necessary zephyr files to setup a basic project.

2. Open VScode and open the that empty directory. In the nRF Connect Welcome View, click Manage SDKs

3. Click Create West Workspace

...

4. Select directory that you have created.

5. Select SDK version

6. Click Run West Update

7. I can see after the update external folder has been created that contains all the NCS files for this particular workspace:

Now, when I open that directory (C:\Users\petrikas.lu\Desktop\WORK\NRF\west2). The SDK version is immediately recognised. As you can see from the image below you can see that v2.4.1 is recognized. I can build the project without any issues.

So this is not the end of the world since I can work with NCS and VSCode by using workspace application (downloading NCS versions for every project that I do). 

I am just very interested to know what could be an issue why the VSCode not able to detect NCS versions installed and why I cannot create Freestanding applications.

The engineers took a look, and they wanted me to emphasize that you will not be able to interact with the global SDK installations as soon as you have a another west workspace in your VSC workspace - there can only be 1 at the time.
If you would like to work with the global SDK installation instead you can open a new VSC instance and use the 'open as workspace' option under file, and select the SDK location.

It is also not quite clear to them why you are not able to see the globally installed SDKs.
Could you share with us the output when you generate support information?
You can do this by pressing ctrl + shift + p -> generate support information.

Yeah. Lets not think too much about west workspace as that is not how I prefer to work with NCS. I just simply mentioned that there is a workarround for me to still be able to work with NCS even though its not working as expected.

Normally, with my personal PC, I just install latest NCS via toolchain manager (not the west workspace) and whenever I open VSCode I can immediately see all installed versions in the Welcome view. I will post the screenshot how it looks on my personal PC when I get back home. But that is not the case at my work computer. I can install as many NCS versions I want but none of them will show up and I will not be able to use NCS unless I create west workspace.

This is how it looks on my personal computer (I have 2 NCS versions installed):

And this is how it looks on my work. As you can see in the Welcome View, no SDK is detected even though I sure installed NCS via toolchain manager.

On both computer, I have followed the exact same installation steps, NCS on both computer were installed via nRF For Desktopt toolchain manager.

It is especially strange because when I click Manage SDKs in the welcome view and click Install SDK, I can then select the version v2.5.0 it shows that it has already installed!

So the VSCode knows that I already have NCS v2.5.0 installed but somehow something is still not right.

Thank you for the additional information - it is very strange indeed, especially that your 'workspace' and 'SDK's are empty in the support information too.
The behavior on your personal computer is the expected behavior, at least.

What is the output when you run the following command from any cmd prompt?

reg query HKCU\Software\Kitware\CMake\Packages\Zephyr

Thank you for keeping up the discussion. 

As you can see from above, there seems to be issue with the registry editing. I will contact system administrator perhaps he can look at this.  In the meantime, is there anything else you would like me to check?

I am writing with good news! I have contacted my system administrator and shown them the logs above.

System administrator told me that according to GPO (group policy object), the regedit has been disabled for some safety purposes. He applied exception for me and enabled it.

After this, I can confirm that it works like a charm! Thank god we solved it! It is good that you have suggested to try this command because it allowed us to understand what could be an issue exactly!
