nRF9160 does not connect to network

I have a nRF9160-DK but it will not connect to the network. I also have a Thingy:91 that will connect to the network.

Thingy:91 test:

> AT+CEREG=5

OK
> AT+CSCON=1

OK
> AT%XSYSTEMMODE=1,1,1,0

OK
> AT+CFUN=1

OK

+CEREG: 2,"7B0D","000A150C",7

+CSCON: 1

+CEREG: 1,"7B0D","000A150C",7,,,"00001010","11000010"

+CSCON: 0

nRF9160-DK test:

> AT+CEREG=5

OK
> AT+CSCON=1

OK
> AT%XSYSTEMMODE=1,1,1,0

OK
> AT+CFUN=1

OK

+CEREG: 2,"7B0D","000A150C",7

The nRF9160-DK is stuck on stat 2, "2 – Not registered, but UE is currently trying to attach or searching an operator to register to", while the Thingy:91 with the same simcard will go to stat 1, "1 – Registered, home network".

What can be the problem and how to fix this, having the problem with the nRF9160-DK all day now and for debugging purposes I programmed them both with newest modem firmware and Serial LTE Modem to find out this difference with the same simcard at the same location?

  • I think quite long as in about an hour but no sure, at this moment it is running 15 minutes without success, at the Thingy:91 is takes 1, 2 maybe 3 seconds to jump to the next step.

I ordered this one last week, NRF9160-DK - Nordic Semiconductor - Development Kit, Nrf9160 Wireless Module, LTE-M (farnell.com), don't know where else I can information about the version of the board? The sticker at the back says PCA10090, 1.1.3 and 2023.31.

I will take a look for the modem trace, read something about it in the Cellular IoT Fundamentals course I think.

While typing this the board is connected now after 20 minutes. It is working now, but still the question why does it take max 3 seconds at the Thingy:91 and also at this board yesterday and now 20 minutes? I rebooted it and waited 5 minutes but still not registered again.

Waiting 20 minutes to make a connection and come online is not really workable for development and also not for the production product I am evaluating the SiP for.
