Travelling with a nRF9160DK and iBasis eSIM in South East Asia

Hey all,

I am working with a nRF9160DK device evaluating the performance of the nRF Cloud platform by using the Cellular: nRF Cloud multi-service sample. I have managed to flash it and send data using MQTT/CoAP from Sweden and Thailand. As I'm currently trying to connect over cellular networks in Indonesia I can't seem to get a connection. The device just continuously tries to reconnect. The iBASIS coverage map doesn't seem to include Thailand or Indonesia - which gave me hope that Indonesia should work since Thailand did. Perhaps a rather naive idea! According to the GSMA coverage map Thailand supports both LTE-M and NB-IoT while Indonesia only has NB-IoT. This makes me wonder if the nRF9160DK needs some specific overlay when building firmware to enable/support NB-IoT connectivity (similar to enabling CoAP protocol)? As I'm not sure how the device should behave in different scenarios I'm simply sharing some questions to the forum and would greatly appreciate any advice/experience:

- Should the nRF9160DK "automatically" connect to LTE-M or NB-IoT based on what's available? That doesn't make sense in my opinion, perhaps my device is configured for LTE-M and I need to change it while in Indonesia?

- Has anyone successfully used the nRF9160DK and its cellular connectivity in Indonesia? I know that there are some specific considerations here regarding the IMEI registration with the operator, perhaps that's what's blocking the cellular connection?

Thanks in advance for any input on the matter.

Cheers,

Koray
