nRF Connect application (android) does not accept .zip files fo DFU

Greetings,

We have been performing DFU, using the nRF Connect application for Android for a while now (more than a year) with no issues.

Just recently a colleague of mine encountered a strange issue where the app won't let them select the usual .zip OTA files used for DFU ( the autogenerated files when a build is performed that we have used for at least a year now, this is shown in 0:25 of the video attached below ), on the contrary on my Android phone the same zip file can be selected with no issue ( with the same application - nRF Connect app). The nRF Connect is up to date on both our phones but on my colleagues, the .zip files are greyed out and cannot be selected whereas on mine they can be selected as usual. Also, note that the DFU via nRF Device Manager works normally for both of us with no issues.

What could cause an issue like this??

  • Hello ,

The file selection screen is a native Android application and may work differently on phones from different manufacturers. nRF Connect or nRF Connect Device Manager just provide the expected MIME TYPE.

    I recommend doing the following:

    1. In the file selection app tap the hamburger menu (top-left corner) and select an item with the phone name, np. Pixel 8.

    2. Navigate to Downloads folder, or wherever you keep the ZIP files.

    3. You should be able to select the file from there.

The generic "Downloads" section has some hidden logic which I don't fully understand. It may allow to select only recent or only files that have already been opened, etc.

Btw, if you can't see the item with the phone name in the menu, try the right-top menu and check for Show local files, or something like that. I see now it has been replaced with "Show hidden files", but on older Android versions there was an option to enable browsking local storage.

Also, from this left navigation menu you may select other file browsers at the bottom, including Google Drive, Dropbox, etc, and select files directly from there.
