How can I enable USB without using ATMEL for nrf52?

We want to be able to use the nrf52 tools without using the devkit. We want to design a debug board for our nrf52 design. Please advise.

One option is to access UART over a FTDI bridge. Please make other suggestions.

Your question is somewhat ambiguous. Is what you want the separation of USB CDC and connectors for an external debugger?

What does ATMEL have to do with it?

For debugging, you can use a standard debug adaptor such as a Segger J-Link, a uLink (Keil only) - or there are many threads here about using as ST-Link...
