SES renewal of license

Hi, hope someone can help me.

The past 3-4 years I have used SDK 17.1.0 and SES for SW development where the SW is running on a nRF52840 SoC which is the heart of our product.

We are now considering move over to a new development platform, nRF Connect SDK v2.6.2. As a preparation I downloaded (approx. a year ago) nRF-Connect for desktop and installed it on a brand-new Windows 11 computer and started to use the new PC for development

For development using SDK 17.1.0 I use “nRF Connect SDK 1.9.1” and then open SES.

For teaching myself I use “nrRF Connect SDK v2.6.2”

Both is opened via Toolchain manager v1.2.6

Today, when opened SES, I got this warning:

The support and update period for your SEGGER Embedded Studio for ARM license will expire in 11 days.

If you do not renew your license, you may use any version of SEGGER Embedded Studio for ARM which has been released before fre. okt 25 2024.

With a license renewal you will get

- the latest updates of SEGGER Embedded Studio for ARM to be always up-to-date

- technical support from SEGGER

For a license renewal please visit our purchase website or contact your local SEGGER distributor.

So, to my question: How do I renew the license?

  • Hi Svein,

For development using SDK 17.1.0 I use “nRF Connect SDK 1.9.1” and then open SES.

I don't understand this statement.. The nRF 5 SDK and nRF Connect SDK are two different software developing platforms, the latter based on Zephyr.. nRF 5 SDK is in maintenance mode and no new updates will be made for it.. You can read more about it here:  nRF Connect SDK and nRF5 SDK statement

For using the nRF 5 SDK, you just need to have Segger Embedded Studio installed in your PC and open the hex file through that.. nRF Connect SDK does not have official support for SES and has moved to VS Code.. As long as you have SES on your PC, nRF 5 SDK should work fine. Slight smile

I am not sure about SES license and the like, and I guess you might need to get in touch with Segger for more info on this.. I have a previous version of SES (SES for ARM v5.62) on my PC that works well with nRF 5 SDK.

    Regards,

    Swathy

  • Hi Swathy
Let me try to describe in more detail.
I have “nRF Connect v4.4.1 for Desktop” installed on my computer (Windows 11).

    1-step: I open nRF Connect
2-step: From nRF Connect I select and open Toolchain Manager
3-step: From Toolchain manager I select “nRF Connect SDK v1.9.1 where I can select and open SES.
4-step: When SES is opened, I can open my solution where I use SDK17.1.0

Under step 4 above the pop-up window is opened with warning about that the license will run out within 2 days. If I select OK in the pop-up window SES is started as normal and I can open my solution that I am working on.

My concern now is what will happen when the license runs out in 2 days? Will SES stop working? We are in a critical phase of our project and it is uppermost important that the development environment is working 100%.

  • We have a lifetime license for the SES version used with nRF Connect SDK so you should be able to use that version going forward. The license server has an expiry date but you should be able to get it renewed, may have to install the latest version and then keep using the old, this as SES doesn't allow you to register a new license on the old version but allows to run an old version with a new license. If you get issues with renewing then post the sequence you went through and that failed.

  • Hi again, How do I perform renewing of the SES lisence? If you could make a "step-by-step" list on how to renew the lisence, I would be really happy. I have no idea on how to renew the lisence.

  • If/when your license expires then you'll get a pop-up stating you don't have a valid license when you try to build your project (if I recall correctly, more than a year since I did last time). You should have an option to request a new, free license for Nordic devices if you build for a Nordic part, if so then follow the guidelines. If that option is not there then download the latest SES version from SEGGER and try the same. This should also enable the old version.

  • I think we can close this ticket until further. The licence have expired, but now I get a pop up window saying that if I do not renew the license I will not get SES updates, but I can still use the current version of SES. As for now, I am satisfied with that.
