Obtaining IMEI for nRF9161 without Pro License Requirement

Good evening,

I noticed that the IMEI for the nRF9161 is not embedded like it is for the nRF9160, and it requires retrieval either through nRF Cloud or via the API. However, when I attempt to request the IMEI, I am prompted to upgrade my nRF Cloud license from the Dev plan to the Pro plan, which incurs a monthly cost.

Is there any way to obtain the IMEI for the nRF9161 without needing to pay for the Pro license?

Thank you in advance!

  • Hello,

Have you ordered and received nRF9161 modules? If not, the nRF9151 could be a better solution as these modules contain a ready-programmed Nordic IMEI. Note that nRF91x1 development devices (DKs, EKs, and Thingy devices) still have pre-programmed IMEIs.

I am prompted to upgrade my nRF Cloud license from the Dev plan to the Pro plan, which incurs a monthly cost.

Customer specific IMEI Type Allocation Code (TAC) can be obtained through nRF Cloud or from GSMA. You could use the latter in order to obtain an IMEI range. Please reach out to your local sales representative. If you do no have the contact details, please send me a PM with your location and I will provide a contact.

    Kind regards,
    Øyvind

  • Hello Øyvind,

    Thank you for your response.

I have already purchased and assembled five nRF9161 modems on my custom PCB's. These are prototypes, and I’ve successfully built and tested some of them. Previously, I used the nRF9160, which already had the IMEI pre-programmed.

I arealdy have a code working and everything is fine but, for my current testing needs, I require the IMEIs for the nRF9161 modules.

Thank you in advance for your guidance.

    Best regards,
    Lucas.

  • Hi Lucas, yes, you must have a pro account. The IMEIs do not cost anything when acquiring from nRF Cloud with the Pro account. You can find prices here: https://nrfcloud.com/#/pricing

    Kind regards,
    Øyvind
