Verizon certification FOTA testing support

Hello,
We are currently trying to certify our nrf9161 gateway device and we need some direction on the best way to get through FOTA testing. From what I understand, it is best to use Verizon's client to test FOTA since there will be less things to validate than using our own system. When I tried to set up the "ThingSpace Software Management Services" through Verizon, I got an error message to contact our Verizon account representative. I reached out to our current certification contact at Verizon about this and was told to reach out to our module OEM to set up testing through the "Nokia Motive Bridge server". I cannot find a way to access this and I cannot find any useful information on it. Do I need someone at Nordic to provide access to it?
How do your customers normally handle FOTA testing through Verizon? I verified that the http_update/modem_full_update sample application works on our board. I just need to connect all of the dots here for firmware updates to be initiated using Verizon's stuff. After getting our device certified, we would handle our own application updates via our private server.

  • Hi,

Nokia Motive Bridge is a test house employed by Verizon. Once you have an account there you will find a front-end for running tests on an LwM2M client. In this case, the nordic device, using our LwM2M carrier library, is the LwM2M client, and we can connect to the Motive Bridge LwM2M device management server(s).

The access to Motive Bridge is not something we can provide. Please talk to your local Verizon certification manager, or aks Verizon support to get you in touch with them.

Once you have this access we assume the needed NDA is in place and we are allowed to share our internal how-to guide for FOTA testing. (There is plenty of info in Motive Bridge’s own FAQ pages, but we provide some context for using Nordics LwM2M carrier library).

In our experience, it is ok for customers to handle their own FOTA, but they must prove that they can connect and accomplish modem FOTA through Verizons Device Management servers as part of certification. Fear not! The LwM2M carrier library will handle it with little to no intervention from your application.

For more info on the LwM2M carrier library see here: LwM2M carrier.
A sample application that uses the library is located in samples/cellular/lwm2m_carrier and is recommended to get started (before integrating the library in your own application. More info here: Sample description).

Good luck with the certification and don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have further questions.

    Best regards,

    Charlie
