Question: External Flash IC for Matter Devices

I am currently considering the use of an external Flash IC for a Matter device.

I have two questions and would appreciate your help:

1. Is the MX25R6435FZNIL0, which is mounted on the Development Kit, the reference IC for the external Flash?
2. Apart from the MX25R6435FZNIL0 used on the nRF52840-DK and nRF54L15-DK, are there other reference ICs for Flash?

Hi,

You can use any SPI NOR flash devices that you wish to use. W.r.t Matter, the only considerations you need to make are those mentioend under "External flash" in the hardware and memory requirements for Matter: https://docs.nordicsemi.com/bundle/ncs-latest/page/nrf/protocols/matter/getting_started/hw_requirements.html#external_flash

The MX25R6435FZNIL0 that we use on our Development Kits are not really a reference IC for external flash, but it's rather an external flash that someone determined to be a good alternative to use at a certain point in time when designing our Development Kits.

Hi Kenta,

No, unfortunately we don't have any external flash that we explicitly state is our reference IC, but we do use the MX25 in quite a lot of our development kits.
