Wire antenna?

Hello, is it possible to use a wire antenna with nRF52832?

I have read that only PCB or chip antennas are used, so I expect the answer to be no, just wanted to confirm. I was thinking about a wire soldered perpendicular to the PCB, so we can reduce pcb area, and I thougth it could improve performance for being the antenna in "free air".

So is it possible or what are the downsides of this?

Thanks a lot,

Luis Rodenas

  • Thank you Dave. By 1/4 wavelength you mean the length of the straigth wire, or that it should have geometry like waves, as some pcb antennas are? If you meant length, any guess what is the length of a 1/4 wavelength at 2.4Ghz? And why 1/4? Does it get better if I increase/decrease it? Sure I am also planing to use matching circuit. Let's see if somebody knows downsides or why no one is doing this.
