nrF5340-DK ICMU USB Power not working

Hi I'm having the exact same issue found in this post:

nRF5340 DK not powering correctly over USB — only works on coin cell (dim/blink behavior).

I've only just started evaluating the board and haven't gone as far into measurements as that poster, but something is obviously not working correctly so i came to this forum to see if anyone else had the same issue recently. The operation is exactly the same as this poster and the DK version is the same.

With the switch on USB, and using J2, there is a short flash of all LEDs and then nothing. Power will work with the VDD coin cell and LEDs will very faintly illuminate with J3 and USB selected on the switch.

Have others seen this issue with the USB power not working from J3 and J2 as well or is this a batch isolated problem? I recently just ordered this board from Digikey in Canada and it arrived this tuesday (June 24, 2005).

Cheers

Tom

  • Hello,

Could you send me a picture of the whole DK?
You only need to connect J2 to the PC using a USB cable and ensure that the nRF power source switch is set to VDD.

Is your DK being detected by the PC? Have you tried changing the USB cable? Please make sure the issue isn't with the cable itself. Also, if you're using a USB hub, I recommend trying a direct connection to the PC instead.

    Kind regards,
    Abhijith

  • Hi Abhijith. Here's a photo of the whole DK.

I have verified that the cable is not the issue. It works fine on other devices and dev boards and I have tried other cables that work as well. The DK exhibits the same behaviour with the other cables as well. I am not using a hub.

I have not changed SW10 or SW6, or shorted any solder bridges.

The board will power through the coin cell when SW9 is set to VDD. It will not power through the USB. I have documented some measurements for you.

The 5V pin gets 5V from the coin cell, as well as J2 and J3, so power from the VBUS is fine. The funky behaviour is appearing on the VDD pins when S9 is in the USB position. When J2 is connected, it spikes at 3V for about 10ms then stabilizes at 600mV. When J3 is connected, same thing except it stabilizes at 1.75V.

You can also see when there is no USB cable connected to J2 or J3 and SW9 is set to USB, it enters some kind of hiccup mode. The LEDs quickly flicker very faintly during this time. This stops when the coin cell is removed.

Let me know if you require more information or can advise.

    Thanks,

    Tom
