nRF9160 Jio India Nb-IoT Cell Handover

Hi everyone,

We’re currently using the nRF9160 module with JIO Nb-IoT SIMs in our devices. Could anyone clarify if any specific actions are needed in the firmware for cell handover or cell selection as the device moves between locations? JIO has indicated that nothing is required on their end, but they’ve suggested we confirm with Nordic.

If anyone has experience with this or guidance to share, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I don’t have much experience with the nRF9160, so I’m checking with some of my colleagues. However, please note that it's currently the summer vacation period here in Norway, so many are on leave, which might cause some delays in getting a response.

Could you provide some details about the application you are working with? I'm asking because if the device's location needs to change frequently, NB-IoT isn't suitable, LTE-M should be used instead.

Hi Menon 

The application is Pet tracker. Unfortunately, India doesn't support LTE-M and so, we have decided to go with Nordic + Nb-IoT solution. Interestingly, the big location jumps may not be so frequent but quite possible in case pet goes missing. 

We would want to understand if there's anything specific from Nordic that needs to be done in order to handle such location changes?

Hello,

From the perspective of the nRF Cloud firmware, we don't believe there's anything on our side that can address the issue of "large location jumps." You will need to rely on GPS or another location method of your choice to mitigate this.

If you're looking to configure the modem, I recommend referring to the modem AT command documentation. If you have any specific questions, feel free to let me know , I can take a look or involve the modem team as needed.
