Evaluating nrf5340 for earbuds application

Hi All,

I have a ordred couple of 5340 Audio DKs. I want to configure one of them as headset using the nrf_audio example application and connect to a phone and stream music and calls.

What I have observed is that there is very limited support for LC3 codec in phones. We tried on a new pixel 9 where were not able to find support for LC3 codec. 

Do I need to move to SBC on AudioDK to connect to phones over LEA? or is there something that I am missing?

If I do need to move to SBC, how to ? and after moving will i be able to connect to phone as headset?

I am just getting started with LEA. Please help with any details possible.

Note: I am yet  to receive my audio dk boards.

Can you provide more details about this? What have you tried?

Can you check from nRF Connect Android application if your mobile device supports LE Audio?
You can check this by opening nRF Connect application and clicking on "Device Information".

Thank you for the reply. 

The pixel 8 is with a teammate of mine. However I have a Redmi Note 13 Pro 5g.

In the device information in nRF Connect application -> Device Information I see that LE Audio is supported.

However I don't see LC3 support in Bluetooth audio codec in settings.

Will I be able to connect nRF 5340 audio dk as headset to my Note 13 pro? 

I will give you details about Pixel 9 in sometime.

Hi,

It is recommended that you start by using second nrf5340_audio-dk board (as a gateway) instead of mobile phone. You can have a look at these applications - use either unicast server and unicast client, or broadcast source and broadcast sink. In addition, ensure that all application requirements are satisfied. Software codec requirements specify only LC3 as supported codec for nrf5340 audio applications. To use phone for testing, ensure that it has support for both LE Audio and LC3.

The Software codec requirements states that the application can be configured for other alternative codecs.

Can I configure the Unicast Server example with SBC and connect it as headset over LEA to my Redmi Note 13 phone? I am asking this question because I do need to have a connection with phone as soon as possible for a project.

Hi Kumaresh,

LC3 is mandatory, but other optional codecs might also be added. This would require phone support. If possible, it is recommended that you switch to LC3. Using SBC might work but you would need to test this.
