Clarification on Reselling Custom Firmware Solution on nRF52840 DK

Hello DevZone,

Our team has been working on a customized firmware solution that has been flashed onto the nRF52840 DK to meet specific requirements.

We’ve noted that the board is marked “Only for evaluation and not FCC-approved for resale.” However, I’ve come across a few sources suggesting that if the firmware is custom-built, it might still be possible to sell the final solution.

Could you please confirm if this is accurate?
If not, we’d appreciate guidance on the correct approach to legally commercialize our solution, whether it involves using the nRF52840 SoC on a custom board or completing additional certifications.

Looking forward to your insights.
Thank you in advance!

Best regards,
Yaswanth Pukkalla

  • If you want to resell this as a product and not the evaluation board then you will need to qualify it as an end product in the market you want to sell it, same as for any final product.

Certification rules for evaluation boards are less strict than for final products and all the DKs are qualified to these less strict rules.
