[nRF52840 Sniffer] Unable to Capture SMP Packets in Wireshark

Hi,

I’m using the nRF52840 for BLE packet capturing, including security-related exchanges. However, during analysis in Wireshark, I’m unable to see any SMP (Security Manager Protocol) packets.

Could you please confirm if there are any specific hardware or software configurations required to capture SMP packets?

Setup Details:

• Hardware: nRF52840 (NRF52-DK)

• Sniffer Software Version: 4.1.1

• Sniffer Firmware Version: 4.1.1

• Wireshark Version: 4.4.9 (v4.4.9-0-g57bf67214076)

• OS: Linux

Any guidance on settings or steps to ensure SMP packets are captured would be highly appreciated.

Hello,

Capturing SMP packets should be no different from capturing other packets on the link. Are you sure there are any SMP exchanges in the connection you’re capturing? There won’t be any if the link is being secured using existing keys. Perhaps you could share a sniffer trace that has this issue here?
