Errors when attempting to flash target with J-Link, failure to read board memory, timeouts

I have been having a series of issues with programming from nRF Connect using a J-Link programmer. I have made a couple of other recent posts and in each of those, I thought I had found a solution only for the problem to return in a slightly different form.

My target is an Adafruit nRF52840 Express (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4062). I have used these boards a lot over the past couple of years, including for a released product. Up until the past couple of weeks, I've had no difficulty flashing them.

I am using SDK and toolchain 2.2.0.

Here is what I get when I try to flash from VSCode with nRF Connect plugin:

I took the command from the end of this bit and ran in from a new terminal in nRF Connect. Here's what I got:

Earlier today, after switching the project to use nrfjprog, I was able to flash several times in a row with no problems at all, and I thought the issue was solved.

The fact that the problem seems to come and go like that made me wonder if it could be something like a bad connection. On that thread of investigation:

  • I have tried this with two different target boards and with two different SWD cables and get the same results each time.
  • I am programming through an adapter that goes from the connector on the J-Link to the small 10-pin ribbon cable often used for SWD. Careful inspection of that adapter board reveals no obvious faults or bad solder joints.
  • The programmer itself is a Segger J-Link Ultra+. The label on the bottom says it is version 4.5, manufactured week 25 2018, part number 8.16.28.

I also found another thread here on DevZone where a similar issue was resolved with the addition of a -c option to the programming command to slow down the data rate. I tried adding this and still had the same problems, though the timeouts mentioned were longer.

    Hello,

    The log shows that there is no communication between the Jlink probe and the nRF target. I can reproduce the same error too if I cut the power to the nRF52840 chip on my nRF52840 DK board. However, it’s strange that it suddenly stopped working on your end and also that it happens on two different boards. Do you have any existing firmware running on these boards that tells if you if the chips are powered and functional (for example, blinking an LED, etc.)?

    One indication that the existing firmware is running is that I can see output from the serial over USB CDC ACM. Also, the board has an LED that lights amber when USB is connected. (That's where it's getting power from.)

    When I watch TeraTerm while attempting to flashing, here's what I see:

    • Initially, normal operation, everything is running and I see, for example, indication when a Bluetooth packet is received.
    • Then I click flash in nRF Connect. The process initiates, then I see the error message and it exits with status 33.
    • Immediately after that, I see a short burst of serial spam from the USB CDC about "ring buffer full."
    • Then my firmware starts up again from a clean reset and normal operation resumes.

    So, I am pretty confident that the target does have power. As an experiment, I just went into the jlink utility and typed "power on" to turn on the programmer's power for the target. Then I tried to flash again and got the same errors.

    Next I tried within the jlink.exe console utility typing "connect."  It asked me to configure parameters such as device family, SWD, speed. Then it attempted to connect and failed with the same symptoms.

    We have another product that uses the nRF5340. I tried flashing one of those boards with this programmer. It worked 100% fine, no problem at all and nothing unusual. (Perhaps of note, though, is that when I connect to those boards, I use a different set of cables and adapter, because those boards don't use the small SWD 10-pin connector.)

    So, it has problems with the nRF52840 board, but not the 5340. I have an nRF52840-DK. I plugged the J-Link into the DEBUG-IN port on that and connected using the jlink console app. It seemed to connect fine. I plug it back into the Feather nRF52840 Express board... will not connect.

    So, the problem is with these Feather boards specifically, though they have all worked in the past and I have a product in the field based around these boards. What could have changed? Something with the J-Link software? Any idea what else I should be looking at?

    After thinking about this some more, I pulled out the JTAG to SWD adapter I use for these, looked at it under a bench microscope, cleaned it and inspected it. I put it back on the JLink, careful to make solid connections. And now... everything works again. My current theory is that this adapter has been the problem the whole time. Maybe something is a little wiggly in there. If I wiggle it out of socket slightly I can get the same error message again.
