Using nPM2100 Fuel Gauge with CR123A Primary Lithium Battery

Hello Nordic,

I am currently evaluating the nPM2100 using the nPM2100 Evaluation Kit for a low-power embedded device powered by a CR123A primary lithium battery (Li-MnO₂, ~1550 mAh).

Our goal is to utilize both:

  • the integrated boost converter, and

  • the built-in fuel gauge

in a custom hardware design based on the nPM2100.

While evaluating the board using the nPM PowerUP application, we noticed that the available battery profiles do not include CR123A / Li-MnO₂ primary cells. Because of this, the reported state-of-charge (SoC) appears inconsistent depending on the measurement configuration (e.g., VBAT vs VEXT).

We would like to ask the following:

  1. Is the nPM2100 fuel gauge expected to operate correctly when a primary battery such as a CR123A is connected directly to VBATIN?

  2. Does Nordic provide a battery profile for CR123A (Li-MnO₂) cells that can be used with the nPM2100 fuel gauge?

  3. If such a profile is not available, what is the recommended method for generating or configuring a compatible battery profile for use with the nPM2100?

  4. If a dedicated profile is not available, is there a recommended approach for estimating state-of-charge when using primary lithium batteries with the nPM2100?

Our application is a low-power embedded device with intermittent load bursts, and the battery is not rechargeable.

Any guidance on using the nPM2100 fuel gauge with primary lithium batteries such as CR123A would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,
Daniel Brovender
