Moving from nRF52810 & nRF52832 to nRF54L15

Hello,

We currently have various products built around the nRF52810 and the nRF52832. We almost always use a PCB antenna very similar to the one on the "nRF52840 Dongle" Our current boards all use the standard 0402 parts as mentioned in the nRF52810 / 832 datasheets.

We currently need to build a product using the nRF54L15 but this chip uses all 0201 components. Presently, our EMS vendor does not support passives of 0201 size. We would therefore need to build our board with all 0402 sized passives for the RF stage and all decoupling DEC pins, so our EMS vendor can assemble the boards for us as they usually do. Also, this product would go into final production using 0402s only.

We understand that 0402 components have a higher parasitic inductance than an 0201 which may shift the resonance of the current 0201 based matching network. Thus may be a direct "swap" from 0201 to 0402 may require different values.

We did find this post but it's over 5 years old.

Our questions:

1) Has anyone used 0402's successfully with the nRF54L15? What issues did you come across? How did you solve them?

2) Any gotchas (esp. in the RF stage) that you suggest we watch out for when moving from nRF52 over to nRF54?

3) Has Nordic released a design that uses 0402s with the nRF54Lxx series?

4) If anyone has tried and tested 0402 part numbers for the nRF54Lxx series that they can share, it would be much appreciated!

5) Apart from the usual, any other specific PCB layout considerations to keep in mind?

Thanks!

  • Hello,

) Has anyone used 0402's successfully with the nRF54L15? What issues did you come across? How did you solve them?

It can be done but the values will be different and performance can also differ a bit. So I would highly recommend that the radio is properly tested with the new components size and the accompanying layout.

    3) Has Nordic released a design that uses 0402s with the nRF54Lxx series?

    No we have not.

    4) If anyone has tried and tested 0402 part numbers for the nRF54Lxx series that they can share, it would be much appreciated!

I will see if I can dig up something from our testing but even with a list here I would not say that it would be a good to go setup and will still recommend that proper testing is done to make sure that the radio work as expected with the new match.

    5) Apart from the usual, any other specific PCB layout considerations to keep in mind?

The PCBA stackup is important, we only recommend 4 layers and try to copy the layout as best as possible.

When ever you have something ready feel free to create a review request here on DevZone and we will help out with both the schematic and layout.

    Regards,
    Jonathan
