Hi Sravan,

Yes, it is backwards compatible. A Bluetooth v6.x device can communicate with a Bluetooth 4.x device, though they will only be able to use the features supported by the older version. For example, a Bluetooth 6 feature like Channel Sounding (introduced in 6.0) would not be available when connecting to a v5.x device.

Bluetooth SIG's own guidelines at https://www.bluetooth.com/communicating-supported-bluetooth-functionality/ states that when marketing a product, focus should not be on communicating the particular bluetooth version the device is qualified against since that may lead to incorrect assumptions about supported Bluetooth functionality. Please note that different versions of Bluetooth just means "version of the specification". A new specification is released every 1-2 years typically. A newer specification typically includes new optional features and keep old features as-is or with minor modifications. There is no guarantee that a particular Bluetooth device implements a specific (optional) feature just because the feature existed in the spec at the time the device was certified. Therefore, when marketing a Bluetooth product, focus should instead be to inform about exactly which Bluetooth features are supported.
