nRF9151DK: Add Build Configuration button (under the application name) in Visual Studio code produces an empty window.

Hi,

I started the tutorial at DevAcademy and I tried to follow the Exercice 2 - Build And Flash your first nRF Connect SDK Application
(https://academy.nordicsemi.com/courses/nrf-connect-sdk-fundamentals/lessons/lesson-1-nrf-connect-sdk-introduction/topic/exercise-2-1/?version=v3.4.0).
When clicking on "Add Build Configuration" button the Visual Studio Code produces an empty window instead of that shown in the lesson.

Here a screenshot of the action AI assistant give me to do (and that I've unsuccessfully done)

  • Hi,

Do you have an SDK and toolchain installed? One possible cause is that the pop-up relies on that information to populate some of the fields. Without them, it can get hung up on loading in.

    Best regards,

    Adam

  • Hi Adam,

yes I installed both the SDK and the toolchain (v3.4.0) as indicated by the steps present in the
Lesson 1 - nRF Connect SDK Introduction".

The only big difference respect to the lesson is that I have a Win10 machine and that I installed
Visual Studio Code via scoop installer. I think that I I should have taken a Win 11 machine and
downloaded the latest VS Code directly from official Microsoft channel.

But now I have no time to do that, fortunately I have already a Ubuntu 22.04 VM where I installed
a working nRF Connect SDK .

  • Hi,

The last bit was just a sanity check on my part. There was a case like this in the past and it traced back to VS Code's extension/user-data paths rather than the SDK or toolchain install. Could you try the following:

    • Check whether the VSCODE_EXTENSIONS environment variable is set, if so, that overrides where extensions are installed and can cause this.
    • Check your VS Code user settings for anything that changes the default extension install location.
    • As a last resort (this is destructive to VS Code's own settings/extensions, not your project), delete %APPDATA%\Code and reinstall the nRF Connect extension fresh.

I know you said that you have no time to troubleshoot further but if you wish to circle back and try out Windows, we are happy to assist further.

  • Hi Adam,

Before to see your last reply removed the VS Code instance from my Win10 machine
and I used a laptop of a work colleague (where was installed a VS Code v1.112.0 version
    - the last one should be v1.130.0 if I'm not wrong) and it worked!

I apologize but I can not do the checkings you asked me: I can only tell you that the erasing
of %APPDATA%\Code was engaged (but %APPDATA%\Code did not exist!).

So I think that my VS Code installation did not work because of I installed via Scoop installer.
I will try again getting it from official Microsoft officail channels.

Thank you very much for your help.

  • Glad to hear you found a work around. If the reinstall works out for you, please let me know. I am curious about the proper fix myself.

    Best,

    Adam
