Development of an NTN IoT Tracker with asset tracker template

Hello everyone,

i am absolutly new to the nRF9151 plattform and the asset tracker template.

So far i have digged through the github repo and also through the code in VS Code. I think, i understand the concept regarding zbus, messages, state machines etc.

I think i also heard it in the introduction video and i also saw it in network.h, that there is no message type to activate NTN. But if you dig deeper into lte_lc.c and xsystemmode.c you find implementations for NTN with info about the needed modem firmware.

This got me thinking, How much affort is needed to get NTN running with this complex template.

Do you just have to add a message and another case for NTN or is there a lot more.

I ask this question, because i want and need to develop a NTN capable asset tracker as part of my master thesis. Either i go on with this or i just use something else (maybe just AT Commands and a really basic SW on the µC in the SiP), since i mainly needed NTN to work, but a whole OS could also be beneficial for the future.

Hi Maximilian,

There is an experimental branch of the Asset tracker template which already works with NTN (link), and one with both TN and NTN (link).

Those branches are not production-ready, but they show that it is very possible to use NTN on this template.

To run these applications, be sure to flash the NTN modem firmware to your nRF9151, and to have a NTN-capable SIM card.
