can i use DFU bootloader for flashing the external microcontroller

I have an idea of using nrf51DK along with another external microcontroller both of them are connected via SPI inerfacing the aim of my question can i use the bootloader available in the NRF51 for flashing the External AVR microcontroller instead of flashing the NRF51822 Itself whether it is possible or not if possible what are things should be taken care of ? as i read from the NRF51documents they mentioned the NRF51 stacks are available inside the SOC itself so i cannot able to modify the stack pointers so anyone could verify my ideas and propose me some suggestions to complete my vision

Hello,

You can use the DFU bootlaoder to update the AVR with some modifications. I.e., relay received FW data from BLE over to the AVR through SPI when DFU of AVR FW has been requested. You could add a new req. op code to request update of the AVR, see DFU service.

could you please verify my point the request can only be initiated by AVR microcontroller? if yes means then only the DFU from NRF51 Will update the new firmware to the AVR or i can update the firmware from NRF51 DFU to the AVR microcontroller whenever i wanted?

Thank you so much for your reply vidar do you have any examples or references files to check my logic? could you describe in detail about this point ? relay received FM data over BLE there is also an DFU availble on AVR also? SO if i understand you clearly NRF51 and AVRchip boh should contain he DFU and then the DFU from the AVR should send request message to NRF51 DFU TO UPLOAD THE NEW FM?

Unfortunately, this is not something we have any examples for and the behavior of the DFU feature will depend entirely on how you choose to implement it. You can for instance choose how a FW update should be initiated. If possible I would suggest to try to make it into a single chip solution. I think that is going to make it easier.

actually my aim of the project is to flash the software into the chip directly without using any type of serial communications so in order to do that i see some possibilities of doing it by Nordic chip set all i wanted to verify my logic first with the Nordic team
