Android - is HID over BTLE supported same as HID over BT?

After Googling and searching this forum I still don't know if I can make an HID peripheral (a touchpad) for Android that operates over Bluetooth Low Energy, and is accepted just like a standard Bluetooth HID peripheral of the same function.

Anyone have insight into this? I'd like to use the NRF51822 if I can instead of an RN-42 + MCU for a bunch of reasons.

Google announced support for Bluetooth Low Energy HID or as it is called HID over GATT (HOG) with the announcement of Kitkat 4.4

My question is geared toward the functionality - will a BTLE HID accessory (like a keyboard, mouse, etc.) work on the OS-layer (without requiring an app) like a Classic BT HID accessory?

Yes, as Svein-Egil says, such support was included in KitKat, so from that point onwards, such devices will just work.
