NFC in Jewelry, Enabling Payment

Can Nordic Semi technology be used to turn gold or silver jewelry, especially rings and bracelets, into payment devices, storing the payment card information? I am not technical but would like to know how to achieve this. Please see the story below for more details on the use case.

Visa is introducing a payment ring in the Summer Olympics this year. www.digitaltrends.com/.../

The nRF52 has NFC that can be used for exchange/retrieval of data.

The nRF52 comes in different package sizes, the smallest is the WL-CSP version. It has the following dimensions: 3.83mm x 3.83mm with a height profile of 0.35mm

Another benefit with the nRF52 is that it can have BLE support. It means that the data in the chip can be updated over BLE, using a phone for instance.

  • Hell Alexander,

While nRF52 is probably able to emulate EMV compliant "NFC card emulation" device (rather call it "contactless") aka "payment card" it almost certainly cannot pass security certifications required. So unless you target some close loop proprietary solution (where you would certify the device + app) it pretty much cannot be used for payment beside some dummy demos.

    Cheers Jan
