How to connect to my nrf51822 BLE chip

Hi, I'm having some trouble connecting to the nrf51822 chip and I've tried connecting to it using master controller, nrf connect, and nrf toolbox. The chip isn't even appearing as a device I can connect to. I've got all of the correct firmware flashed onto the usb dongle, PCA10031, so I don't think that's the problem. Is there some way my chip could be in some sort of sleep mode that prevents me from connecting to it? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Have you tried loading a program into the nrf51822?

How do i do that without connecting to it via Bluetooth? Is there a way to hard connect to it?

Well, I bought the kit, nRF51 DK, and in the box is a USB to micro USB cable (reference: www.cablestogo.com/.../usb). The development board has a micro USB port on it and that's the hard wire connection. This is the hard wire path used to drop software on the chip or debug it. With the kit, using the NXT mbed compiler, you simply load an appropriate software program, compile it, save the compiled hex file, then drag and drop the hex file on the folder JLink that appears in the File Explorer navigation tree. Turn on the on/off button and you could probably disconnect the 3 volt supply so you don't waste battery power by disconnecting the USB cord then storing the device while the power is on (it'll drain the battery eventually). Most of this information is in the User Manual for the Development board; however, I fear you have not bought the development board. In that case there are tutorial here on the Developer Zone that I am now going thru...on the opening page of the Developer Zone is a "muted" single line main menu that lists Tutorials.
