Are there any IPv6 IPSP routers available on the market?

Hey,

I was reading about nRF5 IoT SDK and it all looks amazing, I am really shocked. There is only one bottleneck I can see right now and I am not sure if there are any solutions available on the market.

Lets suppose that I develop BLE sensor that implements IPv6 IPSP and I want to connect it to the Internet, then I need IPv6 IPSP router but I struggle to find any device that would be capable of it on the market.

So right now I also have to design such a router, for my solution to be usable for potential customers. I think this will kill me as a small vendor, cause it will require from me a lot of time, work and money. What is more, soon there are gonna be a lot of such routers designed by well known huge vendors that specialize in making routers and no one would anymore use my IPSP routers.

My question is, do you already know any IPSP routers that are ready to buy and use?

  • Unfortunately, we are not aware of any such routers.

We know that many commercial routers have chipsets that support Wi-Fi and BLE, because we have flashed them with OpenWRT firmware so that they support IPv6 over BLE, so it should only be a firmware update to enable the hardware. Search for OpenWRT in the blog section for more information.

  • It is weird that 6LoWPAN using BLE is still not embedded into routers. It has been well known since 2012-2013 that there will be request for it and none of big vendors have released such router to the market so far. I guess they first want people to spend money on proprietary vendor specific gateways (that are not even capable of IPv6) and then they will release standard routers with BLE IPv6 capability so that people will have to buy another "innovative" device, without which they will not be able to brag about their IoT gadgets.
