Is "asserted" low or high logic level in case of UART?

This should have been a very simple question. I don't want to use CTS/RTS flow control signals with my UART-USB-converter ("FTDI chip"). For that case, the document says "the CTS signal on the other device (the FTDI chip) can be tied to the asserted logic level". However, I am not sure whether the UART uses inverted logic, in which case asserted would be low (zero volts), or vice-versa, when it would be high (the power supply voltage). I haven't found a clear answer yet, maybe somebody could clarify the thing here?
