PCA10040 PCB antenna type? (PIFA, MIFA, etc)

Hi, I just copied the antenna drawing by referencing the PCA10040 v1.1 and checking the white paper (λ/4 printed monopole antenna for 2.45 GHz).

I didn't have much knowledge about the λ/4 printed monopole antenna.

To tell the truth, I realized there were various types of antenna far later

like planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) or Meandered Inverted-F Antenna (MIFA)

but I had no idea what antenna type I was copying.

/**************************************/

So the questions are,

  1. what type of antenna is used in the PCA10040 v1.1?

  2. I was lucky that my custom PCB (that uses nRF52832-QFAA) is a circle which had a radius of 40mm so I had enough space to draw the PCB antenna when copying the PCA10040.

Sadly, in the next PCB project, I have to create another circle custom PCB which has a radius of 23mm and uses nRF52832-QFAA.

This PCB has to mount inside a circle plastic case.

Also, the client doesn't want the chip antenna due to price.

Is there a recommendation PCB antenna layout for small PCBs?

-Best Regards

  • Hi Mango,

    both the nRF51 DK and the nRF52 DK uses a λ/4 printed monopole antenna. You can find the hardware files(gerbers, schematics, BOM) for the nRF51 DK and nRF52 DK here and here respectively.

    If you're looking for a space-efficient antenna, then you can use the Meandered trace antenna from the nRF51 Dongle, you can find the hardware files here.

    Best regards

  • Not completly differnent, the λ/4 antenna and meandered are two differnet PCB trace antenna designs. λ/4 antenna antenna is the easiest to implement and tune, but it takes up more space than the meandered antenna. The meandered antenna is smaller(in size, but longer than the λ/4 if you streach it out), but will give you a lower bandwith and gain compared to the λ/4 antenna. I am afraid that we do not have a white paper on the meandered design. If you're new to antenna design, then I suggest that you copy the antenna in the Altium files from one of the DK/Dongle designs.
