Is a carbon fibre enclosure as bad as comments online would suggest, for 2.4Ghz RF?

Not necessarily. As long as the enclosure doesn't absorb RF, it should be ok. Carbon fibre doesn't have shielding properties, like metal. But the epoxy might affect the signal, especially if the antenna is close to the enclosure.
Try putting a sample in a microwave oven (not metal!) If it becomes hot, it absorbs RF and can't be used.
Thanks. The RC seems to be against carbon fibre saying to shields the RF. I have looked at some datasheets for the fibres (as opposed to the epoxy) and they quote low resistivity so I assumed that would mean they would cause a problem.
I've ordered a good CF skinning kit and will test, as well as woven fiberglass to compare to.
