nRF8001 external crystal

Hi i'm new in dev zone and i have a question now i work with nRF8001 and i want to design a pcb for it. I want to reduce the BOM and for this i want to use only the internal clock, but what is the difference between internal (32kHz) and external (16MHz) clock/crystal? the speed of IC?!

thanks

  • The 16 MHz crystal is used to generate the carrier frequency for all radio transmissions, and is required for the nRF8001 to be able to send Bluetooth packets. The internal 16 MHz clock is too inaccurate for any on-air activity.

The 32 kHz crystal is used for timing of the connection events and similar, but this crystal is not required. An internal RC can be used instead, but since it is more inaccurate, the nRF8001 will have to compensate by staying in receive mode for longer. Using the 32 kHz RC will hence increase the average current consumption, with a couple of microampere.
