S132 Roadmap

Hi there,

The S132 SoftDevice for the nRF52832 has grown in size from 0x1F000 for release 1.0.0-2.alpha, to 0x23000 for 5.0.0-3.alpha. It appears that the nRF52840 will start using a new S140 SoftDevice.

Currently there is 372K available for the application + bootloader with 5.0.0-3.alpha. I'm trying to get an idea of what additional features might be added to S132 5.0.0-3.alpha moving forward, in anticipation of how much space will be available for the application with future versions of the SoftDevice for nRF52832. I'm assuming at some point development will move to the S140; and beyond the L2CAP and LL features in S132 5.0.0-3.alpha, I'm not sure what could be added to increase code size of the SoftDevice.

Is there a published roadmap for S132? Does anyone have an idea of any major features that could potentially be added for the S132/nRF52832, beyond what has already been implemented in S132 5.0.0-3.alpha? I would think it's safe to assume that the S132 wouldn't grow by much more than it's already grown (16K), but I'm curious to see if anyone has any more insight into this.

We will not change the size of a SoftDevice without changing the major revision. The production version of the S132 v5, and any potential minor updates to S132 v5, will keep the same size.

This includes features such as the connection oriented channels, object transfer protocol support, and the improved channel selection algorithm, planned for the production version of the S132 v5.

There might be a larger S132 v6 in the future, but it would be up to each customer to decide if the new features are worth the flash overhead. There is no need to update to the latest major version of the SoftDevice if you don't need the features it brings.

We don't publish road maps, no. It is very hard to predict the future, and we often have to make adjustments to the road map along the way, so we don't want to promise more than we can deliver ;)

    Best regards
