New to ARM and nRF51822 - Development kit and Software requirements

Hi I am completely new to ARM development world. I have been developing for years for PC.

Now I am working on a Project where we have decided to evaluate nRF51822 chip. So I want to get myself familiar with the ARM development world and also pick a right board to get started.

I came across this answer on the forum.

However, since the last answer, they also have an additional mbed development board.

1. Which one I should pick?

2. What should be my startup software requirements? I haven't setup any IDE or toolchain yet. I did find there are different toolchains out there of the ARM processor. What would be free/evaluation version of IDE/toolchain I should use to get started? I have access to Windows, Mac and Linux so the development platform is not an issue.
