  • My suggestion is to invest ~$40 to nRF5x DK where you have SEGER J-Link. License permits to use it with Nordic Semi products during development/testing, so if that is not limitation for you it will probably be the safest option (because all Nordic tools work with it and Nordic support team uses it as tool of choice so they might provide the best help if really needed).

  • I encourage anyone who's eligible (ie non-commercial user) to spend the around $100 on a JLink EDU. Note even though it's called 'EDU' it is available for all non-commercial work.

Whereas the debug out on the devkit (which I also recommend people buy) does work and works pretty well, a full size JLink debugger, which is just a debugger and nothing else, has been totally worth the money I spent. It also fully allows programming things other than nordic chips, something you technically can't do on the onboard debuggers (not sure if it's locked down at this point).

  • RK is right, SEGGER J-Link OB license restricts from the beginning only to Nordic Semi products and recent updates of SEGGER FW blocks other MCUs actively. You can still downgrade if you need to program some other brand but that's still illegal;) In that light spending $100 for EDU version is very good option.
