can i get a range up to 150 meter ?

Hi,

i'm wondering if there is any IC (for example nRF52832) that can reach a range up to 155 meters available within the Nordic semiconductor catalog ? i know that the Bluetooth range depend on many factors like the PCB design, PCB case... but i mean when the antenna track is well designed and the antenna is tuned in his real environment,

the only option that i know so far that may do this range easily is the nRF52840, but this chip is not available right now, only in a development kit.

thx,

  • Hi Tizana

155m line of sight should be possible with the nRF52832 if you use 1Mbps modulation and +4dBm output power.

The problem with estimating range is that it is so dependent on the environment you are in, that it is dangerous to make any promises.

2.4GHz signals are affected heavily by metal objects and water (including things containing water, such as humans and plants), and as soon as you lose line of sight you are unlikely to get much past 50m.

The nRF52840 should go into production in Q1 next year, so you could start your development on the nRF52832 now and then migrate to the nRF52840 later if the range is not sufficient.

    Best regards

  • Only to increase the range is not the problem. They are severall steps to be cleared before: -What for a device is used as other point? (mobile phone, nRF-based device etc.) -Will you only make a test or should it work after regulatory tests? (FCC etc.) The first step is to choose a very good antena model with a big groundplane. The best amplifier is a good antena. But this rule is valid for booth sides. It makes no sense to talk with +4dBm and a big antenna if the receiver is deaf. Always you must observe the complete setup, not only one endpoint of the connection. I have a costumer application where we come only 1m with a good setup and 4dBm, but the module is inside of the human body :-), the same setup on fre air we reach several 100m
