Can I use different package inductor in impedance matching circuit of NRF52832 design

Hello, I am designing a custom PCB with NRF52832 IC. According to datsheet, required specification of inductor L1 are:3.9nH, 0402 package, 5% and a High-frequecy chip inductor. Can I use other package inductor(other than 0402) with same specifications?

L1 is a part of impedance matching circuit. Can changing its package impact the circuit perforamce?

  • Generally the short answer is "No." The package sizes are generally chosen to match the width of the microstrips or the design has been optimized for a particular package size. To do other than that results is large amounts of parasitic impedance associated with the part placement. This would leave the designer less than certain of the actual effect in the circuit a component may have.

So, assuming you are following the reference design verbatim and having copied the strip geometry across faithfully then, no you should not change the package size.

If you have not copied it faithfully and intend to use different size parts then you will need to re-match the circuit on your design.

If you are really determined to do this then you can probably go smaller to an 0201 but going larger to an 0603 would be a bad idea and would require re-matching.
