Beacon not found error on iPhone 5s

I have a new nRF51822 kit, and although I can (apparently) configure the beacon, it always shows "Beacon not found" when I try to use it.

I'm using an iPhone 5s and the standard iOS7 ("mona lisa") app that shipped with the kit. I'm holding the phone a few centimeters from the beacon which is blinking purple.

Here are some screen shots.

I know that I'm able to talk to the chip, since it shows up as one of the options to configure. I press the SW2 switch and I can (apparently) modify the major/minor parameters. But for some reason, the app "beacon not found".

Any suggestions for what to try next?

  • I had a similar issue upon first connecting the nRF51822 beacon kit. Perhaps you're running into the same issue...

I believe the steps that solved it for me were:

    1. in iPhone app select "Update" tab.
    2. Press SW2 on beacon device -- LED turns 'yellow'
    3. major, minor & calibrated RSSI fields became auto-filled (for me this was major: 1, minor: 38, rssi: -69)
    4. press SW2 AGAIN (LED goes back to original purple blink mode).
    5. in iPhone app select "Beacons" tab -- nRF Beacon is now listed.

I believe it's 2nd depressing of SW2 that seemed to be necessary.
