nRF51422 Soft Device Options

On June 25th I asked a private question regarding be able to use the S110 soft device with the nRF51422. The following is the response I got:

.... Yes you can use the S110. The nRF51422 chip can use all nordic softdevices. Best regards, Stefan Birnir Sverrisson

However, on the most recent s110_nrf51822_7.0.0 release notes the following statement is made: This SoftDevice version is not Production tested on all chip variants. Please see the "nRF51822 Compatibility Matrix" for SoftDevice version suitability for development and/or production. (The "nRF51822 Compatibility Matrix" can be found in the white paper nWP-018, in the downloads section on the nRF51822 product page within the Nordic Semiconductor web page.)

When I pulled up both nWP-018 and nWP-019, neither had any reference to S110 v7.x.x.

I want to know if I can use my module with the latest S110-SD and nRF51-SDK. (7.0.0 and 6.0.0) I used nRFgo Studio to pull the hardware version, CEAAB00 and the hardware ID of 0050.

I want to be able to use the latest code for OTA DFU.

Thanks, Darren

one other question: is the latest OTA DFU functionality available both on the S110 and S310?

  • Darren, we are making an update to nWP-018 now, so the official information should hopefully be available soon.

The s110_nrf51822_7.0.0 has the same compatabilities as the S110 6.0.0 version, so you can use the info for v6.x.x while you are waiting for the document update.

The nWP-019 will not be updated now. But I can confirm that you can run the s110 7.0.0 on the nRF51422 CEAAB00 for development. (For production with s110 7.0.0 on nRF51422 CEAAB00, talk to our support group. I believe this is OK, but due to people being absent I can not get that verified now.)

As for your question on DFU: The only SoftDevice that currently has DFU support is the S110 version 7.0.0. Later, we will make DFU available also on the S120 and the S130.

There is an MBR in the S120 and the S130, but these are not tested, not supported and not the same as the one in the S110 7.0.0.

    With kind regards Asbjørn
