is it necessary to provide 32 MHz oscillator along with 32 kHz oscillator

Hi

in pcb designing of the nrf52832 we use two oscillators one is 32 MHz and another one is 32 kHz.

can't we use both 32 kHz instead of one 32 MHz for saving power consumption.

I asked this question just to know about this scenario as I am not a pcb designer.

Thanks

  • The 32.768kHz reference is part of the BLE standard and is also used by designers for timekeeping, and sleep wake functions.

The 32MHz reference is used by the 2.4GHz radio as a frequency reference and optionally as the CPU clock reference.

The external 32MHz crystal reference is REQUIRED for any design that actually transmits!

The 32.768kHz external crystal is not required in designs as an internal RC based 32.768kHz reference can be used in its place.

The downside of the internal RC based 32.768kHz reference is slight higher overall power consumption. For this reason designers normally use an external 32.768 crystal in addition to the 32MHz crystal.
