BLE_ADVDATA_FULL_NAME, yet advertised name is only 4 bytes long...

With this Main.c, I'm only seeing the 1st 4 bytes of the device name in the NRF Connect app.

Note the use of:

    init.advdata.name_type               = BLE_ADVDATA_FULL_NAME;

Am I using up advertising packet space with other data?

  • Hi David.

    Are you adding a 128-bit UUID to your advertisement packet?

    As you might know, you can only fit 31 bytes in the advertisement packet.

    The advertising module shortens the name if there is not room for the full name in the advertisement packet, as the total amount of bytes in the advertisement cannot exceed 31 bytes.

    From the ble_advdata.c:

     // Check if device intend to use short name and it can fit available data size.
        if ((p_advdata->name_type == BLE_ADVDATA_FULL_NAME) && (actual_length <= rem_adv_data_len))
        {
            // Complete device name can fit, setting Complete Name in Adv Data.
            adv_data_format = BLE_GAP_AD_TYPE_COMPLETE_LOCAL_NAME;
        }
        else
        {
            // Else short name needs to be used. Or application has requested use of short name.
            adv_data_format = BLE_GAP_AD_TYPE_SHORT_LOCAL_NAME;

            // If application has set a preference on the short name size, it needs to be considered,
            // else fit what can be fit.
            if ((BLE_ADVDATA_SHORT_NAME == p_advdata->name_type) &&
                    (p_advdata->short_name_len <= rem_adv_data_len))
            {
                // Short name fits available size.
                actual_length = p_advdata->short_name_len;
            }
            // Else whatever can fit the data buffer will be packed.
            else
            {
                actual_length = rem_adv_data_len;
            }
        }

    So the fact that you can only see the first four bytes of the device name, would imply that your advertisment packet is full.

    In you advertisement packet:
    Name = Length (1), Type(1), Data(7) = 9 Bytes
    Flag = Lenght (1), Type (1), Data(1) = 3 Bytes
    Appereance = Lenght(1), Type(1), Data(2) = 4 Bytes
    128-bit UUID = Lenght(1), Type(1), Data(16) = 18 Bytes

    For a total of 34 bytes.

    To be able to fit all the data in your advertisement packet, I would suggest you to take a look at the BLE UART example in our SDK. The BLE UART example shows how to add a custom UUID to the scan response data, which can fit another 31 bytes of data.

    Let me know if you have any more questions.
    Best regards,
    Joakim.

  • Fabulous, thanks. That explains the shortened name length.

    I am using a vendor Service UUID because I think it’s required for the Apple GarageBand (or any BLE MIDI client) to recognize the peripheral device as a BLE MIDI device.

    My challenge: making a human-recognizable device name, and a machine recognizable UUID.

    The BLE UART example seems to advertise using a 16 bit UUID - as a proxy/alias  for a 128 bit UUID.

    I’ll explore that further and see if I can improve my options.

    If the 128 bit UUID must be advertised, it sounds like I can only advertise a 4-character name

    thanks again!

  • No problem! Happy to be able to help.

    We have an advertising tutorial that might be of interest for you.
    The tutorial contains a lot of useful information, and it has a section explaining how to add data to the scan response data.

    Take a look at this post, and Jørgen's answers, where he explaines this very well.

    Also, the appearance isn't necessary to have in the advertisement packet. So if you don't need it, the;

    init.advdata.include_appearance = true;
    can be set to;
    init.advdata.include_appearance = false;
    to shorten the advertisment packet by another 4 bytes.

    Cheers,
    Joakim.
