problem on SoftDevice V6 scan_start/stop

I have problem on SoftDevice V6.0.0(nrf52832) scan_start/stop.

modified ble_app_blinky_c(ble_central)
1. app_timer add (20ms cyclic)
2. app_timer handler, run sd_ble_gap_scan_start() or sd_ble_gap_scan_stop() Alternately
   start->stop->start->stop cyclic
3. if after sd_ble_gap_scan_start() run, ADVERTISE_REPORT is received.
4. if after sd_ble_gap_scan_stop() run, ADVERTISE_REPORT is not received.

But Rarecase,
When after sd_ble_gap_scan_stop(), ADVERTISE_REPORT is received.

Is sd_ble_gap_scan_stop() not stop scanning Immediately?

  • Hi,

    I do not know enough about the inner workings of the SoftDevice to know for sure what its behavior is on sd_ble_gap_scan_stop(), but I would not be surprised if it turns out that for instance a packet that is already in the process of being read by the radio may still be reported. Another explanation might be application code running in different interrupt levels, so that events and API calls appears out of order.

    With some more information regarding what you experience I may contact the SoftDevice team and figure out what is actually happening here.

    How do you know the order of events (sd_ble_gap_scan_stop() called and advertising report received), and have you also measured the time taken between the two?

    Do you have a minimal example showcasing the behavior?

    Regards,
    Terje

  • Upload a sample code.
    (instead of nRF5_SDK_15/examples/ble_central/ble_app_blinky_c/main.c)
    run on PCA10040,
    app_timer event is 20ms interval.

    line 532: sec_req_timeout_handler() app_timer_handle
    cyclic scan_start() or scan_stop()
    and scanstate flag set.

    line 224: on_adv_report()
    line 245: check scan_running.

    app_timer handler is RTC1 interrupt handler.
    on_adv_report handler is SWI2 interrupt handler.
    RTC1(17) and SWI2(22) si same priority.(see NVIC)
    so, app_timer handler and on_adv_report handler is exclusive.

    --------------------------------------------------------------
    The problem is,I can not know when scan_buffer is release.

  • Hi,

    We are now entering Easter holidays here in Norway, lasting through Monday 2 April. I will revisit this after returning to office on Tuesday 3 April.

    Regards,
    Terje

  • OK

    I hope you.

    Additional:

    My test environment is

    Many advetise packet (more than 1000packet per second).

  • Hi,

    Thank you for the code.

    Regarding your initial application, instead of manually using a timer to start and stop scanning you should rather use the scan interval and scan window to achieve the same scanning behavior. Is there any reason not to set scan interval to 40 ms and scan window to 20 ms? Then it will scan on channel 37 for 20 ms, pause 20 ms, scan on channel 38 for 20 ms, etc.

    Regards,
    Terje
