is pullup required on nrf51822 and nrf52832 when GPIO configured for SPI?

I am using the sensors LIS2DH12 and the BMP280 in my new design, both of which work on SPI. i will be using both the nrf51822 and the nrf52832 in separate designs with same sensors. i want to understand if external pullups are required to be used in my design for the SPI bus. i see that output is buffered for GPIO in the nrf51 and the nrf52 ic's. So is this an open collector buffer or is it push pull type output?

i tried using the LIS2DH earlier without using any pullups and it works. but i want to confirm for a generic design point of view for future references.

similar issue with me, i tried buying the lis2dh12 breakout from the ST website and connected to the nordic DK. that one works , but on my custom board it still does not work. i am suspecting some issue with ground or soldering the ic.

i am afraid i cannot provide that as it is confidential. But pretty much follow the register settings from the LIS2DH12 datasheet.
