Test using nRF Connect

You can also test the application with nRF Connect by performing the following steps:

1. Compile and program the application. Observe that LED 1 is on. This indicates that the application is advertising.
2. Connect to the device from nRF Connect (the device is advertising as 'Nordic_Blinky').
3. Observe that LED 2 is on and LED 1 is off. This indicates that the connections are established.
4. Observe that the services are shown in the connected device and that you can enable services for the Button Characteristic by clicking the 'Play' button.
5. Notifications are received on the Button Characteristic (0x1524) when pressing or releasing Button 1.
6. Write '01' to the LED Characteristic (0x1525) and observe that LED 3 is turned on.
7. Write '00' to the LED Characteristic (0x1525) and observe that LED 3 is turned off.

Unable to find this 'Play' button neither on the board nor on application...

PS: at the end of # 3 I have replaced "is" to are.

I have installed nRF Connect for a desktop. My pc does not see any devices(iPhone does).

The scan button is disabled. What else(sw/hw) do I need?

Hi,

Have you connected a nRF5 DK or dongle to the computer? That is a requirement for using nRF Connect for Desktop (it cannot use the built in Bluetooth device of your computer).

I though the initial question was about nRF connect for Desktop, which is why I uploaded the screenshot pointing to the play button that you use to enable notifications. If you use another tool (such as nRF connect for iOS or Android or something else), then there are other ways to enable notifications. Which platform and application are you using?

I see. In that case, the Icon is different. It looks like a few downwards facing buttons. It should look like this when you have enabled by tapping on the button by the red arrow:

The Value field (0x00) in this screenshot should then change to 0x01 while you hold down Button 1 on the DK and change back to 0x00 when you release the button.

The services in your screenshot is not from ble_app_blinky in the SDK, even though the name is. Can you program your board with an unmodified .hex file from the SDK to make sure you have the correct firmware on your board? You can find it under <SDK>\examples\ble_peripheral\ble_app_blinky\hex\.

I sure can, but what is the point? I'm compiling and running your examples, trying to understand what is under the hood, modify them and see the results. I have no doubt that your hex is perfectly fine but it isn't what I'm after.

You tell me :) I assumed that is what you wanted to do, as large parts of your question was a copy-paste of the instructions for that example and a indication that you did not find the button for enabling notifications. If that is not what you want to do, then please let me know what you are after.
