I have been perusing the source to micro-esb, and it appears that it wants exclusive access to the NRF_RADIO interrupt(RADIO_IRQHandler) and things are designed so that only one can operate at a time. Is that correct?

The latest gazell library in the 6.1.0 release of the nRF51 SDK should support BLE and Gazell using the timeslot API in the S110.
There is an example in the nRF51 SDK v6.1.0 that runs BLE and Gazell in paralell, the path is \Nordic\nrf51_sdk_v6_1_0_b2ec2e6\nrf51822\Board\nrf6310\s110\ble_app_gzll
