Drive the NRF52840 with an external 16MHz Clock instead of the 32MHz

Hey Guys,

I am working on a Project with a NRF52840 and it works pretty fine with an 32MHZ external crystal to generate the internal 64MHZ sysclock.

But now, I want to replace the 32MHz crystal with an 16MHz crystal to share this clock with another chip (for reducing cost and space).

Therefore I use the generated clock from the crystal as an Input for an other peripheral chip.

Is it possible to drive the Nordic with an 16MHz external crystal instead of the 32 MHZ one?

I have tried it and the Controller does work fine most of the time, but the softdevice does not advertise anymore.

Is it necessary to change some settings and when yes, which settings do I have to change?

Hi,

 

Using a 16 MHz crystal is not supported unfortunately, you can only use a 32 MHz crystal. See the PS for the crystal requirements.
