nRF9160 IP v4/v6 stack

The product specification state that there is an integrated IP stack in the nRF9160 device. Unfortunately there is no more information available how to use the stack. Also there is no dedicated AT command set for interacting with an IP stack but only PDP related information. For out application we would like to use a UDP packet based transfer with DTLS encrpytion. Now we are unsure if the  nRF9160 fits our needs with limited software development or whether a whole IP and DTLS stack has to be implemented in the application processor by our own.

Please have a look at this header file: https://github.com/NordicPlayground/nrfxlib/blob/master/bsdlib/include/nrf_socket.h

It contains the provided BSD socket API you can use to build your application. The same functions are used for socket offloading using the Zephyr socket API.

The asset tracker demo application for the nrf9160 connects to nRF Cloud (AWS IoT backend) and use MQTT over TLS. See https://github.com/NordicPlayground/fw-nrfconnect-nrf/tree/master/samples/nrf9160/asset_tracker.

CoAP over DTLS works as well. You could use for instance the CoAP library available in upstream Zephyr or the Nordic CoAP library available here (work in progress): github.com/.../311.

I'm looking at this post 8 months later, the link you included is gone (404 Error). I'm also very interested to see the roadmap / release date of the embedded stack. Could you provide a new link?

The modem firmware in production version is available in the nRF9160 SiP download section.
