How to request an enhancement to nRF9160 GPS API to use the PPS timing?

Hi, I see there are several questions related to using GPS pulse per second signals for synchronization between devices, but I can't see the responses to some of the questions since they were handled as private messages.

For the responses I saw, it does not seem that the GPS API for the nRF9160 uses the GPS PPS signal for timing-- it seems position and location are the intended purposes, rather than precision time.

So, I have two questions:

1.  What is the general process for requesting an enhancement to an API for the nRF9160?

2.  Is there a recommended work-around to the existing nRF9160 API to capture the PPS information in a GPS signal? A previous questioner proposed using a callback through a GPIO pin, but I couldn't see the rest of the response because it was PM'd.

Thank you!

  • Hello,

The development status of the nRF9160 can be followed here. Further questions regarding the timeline of the nRF9160 should go through your Regional Sales Manager. From this link, the current status is that we are developing features and optimizing performance and will be rolling out samples with better GPS support on March 31st.

    1.  What is the general process for requesting an enhancement to an API for the nRF9160?

The general process is to post your request here, and we will forward the request internally.

    2.  Is there a recommended work-around to the existing nRF9160 API to capture the PPS information in a GPS signal? A previous questioner proposed using a callback through a GPIO pin, but I couldn't see the rest of the response because it was PM'd.

I would recommend using the NTP Sample we have for the nRF9160 as a workaround while waiting for full API support on March 31st .

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Øyvind, thank you.  Just so I understand clearly:  should we expect this month's release of the full GPS API to include support for the pulse-per-second precision time feature of GPS?

If yes, then we may not need to spend time pursuing NTP as a workaround.

    Thanks again!

If you contact your regional sales manager, he should be able to provide more details on this matter. If you do not have the details for your RSM, please send me a direct message and i'll provide you the details.

    Kind regards,
