J-Link / nRF-51822 not connecting

In following the instructions of the nRF_Sniffer_User_Guide_v2.0.pdf, I'm attempting to use Segger's J-Link software to configure my nRF-51822. The environment is a Mac OSX Mojave (10.14.3).

J-Link reports it isn't able to connect via USB. Here's the full message presented on entering the program:

Connecting to J-Link via USB...FAILED: Cannot connect to J-Link via USB.

The goal is to feed data into Wireshark but so far, Wireshark hasn't been able to locate the nRF at runtime and doesn't include it in the list of potential capture devices.

What type of hardware is your nRF51822 soldered on? And which chip revision is this?

Ok, so this does not have an onboard JLink, according to this link: https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing-the-adafruit-bluefruit-le-sniffer/usb-driver-install

You should probably install the drivers as described in the above link, and then just skip the "install firmware with SEGGER J-Link" section in the sniffer user guide. From the adafruit pages it seems to me that the dongle already has the sniffer firmware.
