Multilink Central UART - Restarting when connected to 2 more more peripherals

Hi all,

I am trying to implement a multilink central with UART. I had looked through the forum on all discussions in about this and followed this thread to come up with the program https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/f/nordic-q-a/41189/multilink-ble_app_uart---ble_app_multilink_central-3

I am running my central on a NFR52DK and using SDK15.2.0 with softdevice S132. I have 2 peripherial (Nordic Thingy) running the default  ble_app_uart program.

My program complies without errors and the multi-link central can also connect to 1 peripheral running the default  ble_app_uart program.

This is the RTT log:

0> <info> app: Multilink example started.
0> <info> app: Start scanning for device...
0> <info> app: Connecting to target 461B790D58E6
0> <info> app: Connection 0x0 established, starting DB discovery.
0> <info> app: Start scanning for device...
0> <info> app: ATT MTU exchange completed.
0> <info> app: Ble NUS max data length set to 0xF4(244)
0> <info> app: Discovery complete.
0> <info> app: Connected to device with Nordic UART Service.

However, if I try to turn on another uart peripheral, the multi-link central gives a FATAL error.

I put a break point inside app_errpr_handler_bare. And the error code 0x00000012 is pass into this function. Inside, error_info is as follows:

error_info.line_num = 0x200080E8

error_info.p_file_name: 0x00000003

error_info.error_code: 0x00000006

I am attaching my codes here. Hope to get some advise on how to proceed forward. Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

    error_info.line_num = 0x200080E8

    error_info.p_file_name: 0x00000003

    error_info.error_code: 0x00000006

    The error information does not appear to be valid. Please select the debug target instead of 'release' if you're using Segger embedded studio (drop down menu in the top left corner). With this configuration, the logger will print out all the file name, line number and error code instead of just "Fatal".

  • Hi Vidar,

    I am using Keil for development as I am not too familar with SES.

    In Keil, under project properties, I have set the optimization to Level 0. Is there a option to select debug or release in Keil? Now I am just debugging the program by selecting Debug -> Start/Stop Debug Session. I have put a breakpoint inside the file app_error.c and int he function app_error_handler_bare.

    When I run the program, this is what I see in the RTT Viewer:

    0> <info> app: Multilink example started.
    0> <info> app: Start scanning for device...

    Then I try to turn on the peripheral running the default default  ble_app_uart program. This is what I see in RTT Viewer:

    0> <info> app: Multilink example started.
    0> <info> app: Start scanning for device...
    0> <info> app: Connecting to target 461B790D58E6
    0> <info> app: Connection 0x0 established, starting DB discovery.
    0> <info> app: Start scanning for device...
    0> <info> app: ATT MTU exchange completed.
    0> <info> app: Ble NUS max data length set to 0xF4(244)
    0> <info> app: Discovery complete.
    0> <info> app: Connected to device with Nordic UART Service.

    When I try to turn on a second peripheral, my program stops at the breakpoint. The error code 0x00000012 is passed into the app_error_handler function.

    I don't really know how else I can check what is the error or problem.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

    You can achieve the same in Keil by adding 'DEBUG' to the list of pre-processor symbols:

    Please try to add this flag, re-compile the code, and use error information printed to  RTT output to find out where the error is returned.

  • Hi Vidar,

    Thank you for the information. I have added the DEBUG symbol. And this is what I am seeing on the RTT Viewer:

    0> <info> app: Multilink example started.
    0> <info> app: Start scanning for device...
    0> <info> app: Connecting to target 461B790D58E6
    0> <info> app: Connection 0x0 established, starting DB discovery.
    0> <info> app: Start scanning for device...
    0> <info> app: ATT MTU exchange completed.
    0> <info> app: Ble NUS max data length set to 0xF4(244)
    0> <info> app: Discovery complete.
    0> <info> app: Connected to device with Nordic UART Service.
    0> <error> app: ERROR 18 [NRF_ERROR_CONN_COUNT] at ..\..\..\main.c:159
    0> PC at: 0x0002C9EF
    0> <error> app: End of error report

    The error appears when I turn on a second peripheral. I still have not figured out what exactly in the problem.

  • Thanks. So the error code is 18=0x12 and returned from a function at line 159 in your main.c file. Can you check what function this is?

  • Hi Vidar,

    Line 159 in my main.c file is inside the scan_evt_handler function.

    case NRF_BLE_SCAN_EVT_CONNECTING_ERROR:
    {
    err_code = p_scan_evt->params.connecting_err.err_code;
    APP_ERROR_CHECK(err_code);   // <-----Line 159
    } break;

  • Hi,

    The error indicates that the Softdevice is not configured to support more than one Central connection. Have you tried to increase the link count in sdk_config.h (NRF_SDH_BLE_CENTRAL_LINK_COUNT & NRF_SDH_BLE_TOTAL_LINK_COUNT)?

  • Thanks Vidar!

    This is indeed the problem. I had set NRF_SDH_BLE_CENTRAL_LINK_COUNT  to 2 but I didn't see that there is another define for NRF_SDH_BLE_TOTAL_LINK_COUNT  and that was set to 0.

    I have change both to 2 and everything works well now.

    // <o> NRF_SDH_BLE_CENTRAL_LINK_COUNT - Maximum number of central links.
    #ifndef NRF_SDH_BLE_CENTRAL_LINK_COUNT
    #define NRF_SDH_BLE_CENTRAL_LINK_COUNT 4
    #endif

    // <o> NRF_SDH_BLE_TOTAL_LINK_COUNT - Total link count.
    // <i> Maximum number of total concurrent connections using the default configuration.

    #ifndef NRF_SDH_BLE_TOTAL_LINK_COUNT
    #define NRF_SDH_BLE_TOTAL_LINK_COUNT 4
    #endif
