I have been looking for a "reset" function for the radio, to get into a known state.
Do you want to reset the entire chip or just get the radio into a different state? There's the rfce bit that will take the radio in and out of active mode.If you set rfce = 0 you will disable the radio. The radio will not be reset however completely unless you do a chip reset. I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve, but I suggest you have a look at for example figure 6 on page 18 of the nRF24LE1 product specification.
